Article Title: Residents ask for wall between I-4,
playground
Summary: I4, a very traffic driven, high speed road
that leads to almost anywhere in Orlando is causing concern for residents. The
people who live close to the highway complain about the loud noises early in the
morning and later in the day and fear that their children’s lives are in danger
if the road is widened unless the Florida Dept of Transportation builds a wall
to separate the high way from areas where their children play. However, FDOT
says that if they build a wall or plant trees to drown out the noise, minor car
accidents may turn major, costing the life of the driver. FDOT also stated
residents knew what they were buying into. No action has been taken.
The Problem: Residents want a buffer between the
dangerous highways and their children, but the FDOT does not, in fear that it’ll
do more harm than good. No action has been taken to resolve or meet either side’s
needs.
Who Has The Problem: The residents of the area next
to the highway, because the highway is loud and dangerous and they live in
close proximity. The resident’s children, because their lives are in danger if
they play in the playground or around the house (which is located near the highway).
The FDOT, because they have to allocate the funds and determine whether or not
it is a good/worthy decision.

Article Title: Nearly $2.2 million set to fight
hydrilla in Harris Chain of Lakes
Summary: Lakes in central Florida are being invaded
by the hydrilla plant. Residents are concerned because their boats are being
caught in the plants and their boat navigation is being impeded by the
hydrilla, which can grow to be 10-12 feet deep. The state is looking to treat
this problem with herbicides which can kill fish and other vegetation given the
amount needed to eliminate the hydrilla. The treatment for several lakes can
cost several million dollars with the Lake County Water Authority setting aside
$1.5 million towards this problem.
The Problem: Hydrilla is taking over lakes and
spreading to different bodies of water throughout central Florida, pesticides
are going to be used to treat them but people are concerned it will ruin bait
fish and kill many fish. With the extent to which they have invaded bodies of
water, any solution will be costly.
Who Has The Problem: Lake County Government,
because residents are angry that their boats will not work and the LCG have to
find the funds to solve the problem. The residents near these invaded areas
also have the problem because their expensive boats are being ruined given the
invasive hydrilla. Lakeside Bait and Tackle have the problem because if the
lakes are treated with harmful herbicide, bait fish and other vegetation can be
killed which can ruin their business.

Article Title: Orlando airport parking provider seeks
permit to bulldoze wetlands for expanded space
Summary: Park, Bark and Fly, a parking Service near
the Orlando International Airport, is fighting against the Orange County Environmental
Protection Division to bulldoze the wetlands in order to expand garage parking.
Park, Bark and fly said that the ecological value of the wetlands have
decreased because of invasive plants, airplane traffic, filthy storm water and
development in the area. OCEPD argue that the wetlands have controlled water
levels and increased plant growth. Action has not been determined yet as to
whether or not the wetlands will be bulldozed for the continuous expansion of
the Orlando International Airport.
The Problem: Should the wetlands be bulldozed for a
parking garage to be built or should the wetlands be preserved? The airport/
airport parking services and Orange County Environmental Protection Division
will be going back and forth to determine the solution.
Who Has The Problem: People who need to find parking
at airports have the problem because they would want more parking to be built.
The Orange County Environmental Protection Division have the problem because
they are fighting to protect the wetlands but the situation will be reviewed by
Orange County board of commissioners.

Article Title: Women likely to ignore signs of heart
disease
Summary: Heart disease is the greatest killer in men
and women in the U.S, but women are at greater risk to heart disease because
any major disease is more inclined to one gender over the other due to
differences in cell function. Over 400,000 women died from heart disease in
2016 alone which is more than cancer, accidents and diabetes (combined in women
in the U.S). There is a misunderstanding that breast cancer is the number 1
cause of death among women and people do not recognize how common and dangerous
heart disease is. Women do not acknowledge and address their issues until later
on in their lives when it is definitely more dangerous to get heart surgery or
other procedures.
The Problem: Women in the U.S are not as aware as
they should be about the dangers of heart disease. They often ignore symptoms
or do not get themselves checked out until later in their life when it is
harder to treat.
Who Has The Problem: Women and men in the U.S because
both genders are susceptible to heart disease, but women are at greater risk to
the problem because they often dismiss the issues and the differences in cell
function.

Article Title: Deputies: 2 teens arrested after
threatening school
Summary: Two young teens were arrested after making
threats to shoot up their school (Westridge Middle School), but school
officials determined the threats to be not credible. A faculty member received a
text from an unfamiliar number, making a threat that “violence to the school
was going to happen now”. Deputies searched the school after students were
evacuated to see if there were suspicious items. Orange County Sheriff’s Office
states they look at actual intent in order to see if immediate action is needed.
Both teens will be facing charges of written threats to kill.
The Problem: How do schools increase safety and
determine if certain threats are credible? Is the safety of students at risk
and how do schools increase their safety? How do you prep students for dangerous,
uncalled for situations?
Who Has The Problem: Teachers/any school faculty have
the problem because they have to protect the students and may lose their life if
a situation were to go wrong. Students because they could be caught in a bad
situation at the wrong time which can cause them to lose their lives. School
deputies because they are at risk protecting the school from day to day threats
or bigger threats such as school shootings. Parents also have the problem
because they may be fearful of their children’s lives and safety whenever they
go to school.
You did a great job with this post. Each story was neatly organized and every summary was well defined so that the readers knew exactly what was going on. I think you nailed it on figuring out who has the problem in each situation, especially in the 5th article. Not only does a student threat on a school affect teachers and students, but also their parents which you noted. Overall, great assignment.
ReplyDeleteHey Bich Giang good job on the assignment, i was drawn into the articles you chose. The last topic you decided to talk about where it was addressing a threat made to a school interested me since it has been an ongoing problem for a while. It is also interesting because there are two sides to the issue, the teachers who want to be armed in case of situations where they would need it to protect themselves and other students. And the other side where parents don't want the teachers to have any weapons because it can bring on more problems.
